Siemens Mobility and Ruhrbahn are digitizing the largest light rail interlocking system in Europe

Siemens Mobility and Ruhrbahn GmbH will update the control and safety technology from the 1970s
in Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr to digital by 2031, ensuring the system is future-ready.
The partners recently signed a contract valued at approximately €180 million,
which includes the digitalization of Europe’s largest light rail interlocking system at Essen Central Station.
The modernization will enhance the reliability and energy efficiency of the interlocking system.
