Scotland's Railway will stay on schedule in autumn with the help of new technology, timetable adjustments and leaf-busting locomotives

15 September 2023 (UK)

Throughout the autumn, Scotland's Railway will deploy specialised trains, modified schedules, and cutting-edge technology to keep passengers and freight moving on schedule.

Throughout this difficult time, Network Rail's 18 leaf-fall teams and fleet of seven leaf-busting locomotives will operate around-the-clock to keep trains running and minimise delays.

As with black ice on the roads, leaves on the tracks make trains lose their grip on the rails and lengthen braking distances.

This impacts signalling systems, which makes it more difficult for signallers to track where trains are, and can also cause trains to overrun signals or platforms.
